Get the rest of your protein from grass fed beef, wild caught salmon, organic chicken and turkey, and plenty of eggs.
Don’t Neglect Fats And Carbs
In order to build muscle, you need to complement the protein with quality fats. A key muscle building fat is Omega 9 fatty acids. You’ll find Omega 9 in avocado, olive oil, and almonds. You’ll also want shorter chain fatty acids, which you can get from grass fed butter, and coconut oil.
Rounding out your good fats is Omega 3, which you’ll be getting in abundance if you consume wild caught salmon one to two times per week. These sources of fat will help to pack on lean muscle without storing on your frame as body fat.
If you want to pack on quality muscle, you mustn’t neglect quality carbohydrates. Top of the list here are sweet potatoes and yams. Both are a great source of beta carotene and are easy to digest. You also want to be consuming a good quality rice, such as brown rice or wild jasmine rice as well as quinoa. Fruit, such as bananas, mangoes and apples, will also fortify your efforts to build muscle.
The ideal macronutrient breakdown for building muscle is 50% carbs, 30% protein and 20% fats.
What To Eat Before Your Workout
Nutrition is what fuels your training. Without the power of nutrients, you’ll have no energy to bring to the party. That’s why you need to have a quality meal about 90 minutes before you step into the gym. If you eat after that time, you are risking digestive upset while you’re working out. Over the course of that hour and a half, though, you’re giving your muscle cells the time to synthesize the protein that you’ve ingested. By the time you walk into the gym, amino acids will be coursing through your muscle fiber.
Your pre workout meal needs to consist firstly of a quality source of lean protein. The number one option is fish, which is easily digestible and packed with branch chain amino acids. Add in a slow release carb source, such as a sweet potato to give you a steady supply of training energy and add in some quality fat such as avocado.
However, tempting it may be, don’t consume high sugar foods prior to your workout. They will give you a quick energy rush, but it will soon be followed by a crash – not what you need in the middle of max set of deadlifts!
Thirty minutes before your workout is the time to take your pre-workout supplement.
Should You Eat During The Workout?
In order to gain muscle, eating while training is a smart move, especially if you’re training for more than an hour. You need to replace both carbs and protein so the best choices are a protein/carb bar or drink. Fast absorbing whey protein is best. You also want fast absorbing carbs, such as dextrose. Make sure that the fat content is low, as fat will slow down protein and carb absorption.
What To Eat After Your Workout
When you walk out of the gym, your body has been forced, as a result of your actions, into a catabolic state. It has broken down muscle tissue. Your job now is to get it back to an anabolic state as quickly as possible. That means one thing – protein!
You need to get 30-50 grams of protein into your body as quickly as you can after your workout. Many guys find having a protein drink sitting in their gym bag is the most effective way to do this. Others opt for 4 or 5 hard boiled eggs. Whatever your preference, your mission is get back to anabolism as quickly as you can by feeding protein to your muscles.
Bringing It All Together
Eating for muscle enhancement isn’t rocket science. But it does require planning and forethought. Think ahead and you’ll be able to meet your 6 meal a day protein requirement. Consistently getting it right will mean that you’ll often be eating the same foods, such as chicken, eggs and sweet potatoes.
That is the path that every guy you look up to has had to follow to pack on mass, and so will you. If you eat smart, train hard and rest sufficiently, your muscles will have no choice but to grow.

My investigation of Crazy Bulk has been quite an education. It has opened me up to a whole new world of supplements that I didn’t even know existed. I knew there were natural herbal supplements and I knew there were illegal steroids. The former produced mediocre results while the latter produced astounding results – along with a whole lot of side effects.
